Sunday Sketch: True Story

True Story

So… I had an uneventful spring break. Which meant that my content for this post was limited to me making fun of myself and my study habits. So this comic is based on the entirely true fact that I tend to browse foreign real estate and listen to bad music when I’m supposed to be focusing on other things.

What’s In Your Bag

The items I usually carry in my backpack:

  • Notebook
  • Laptop
  • Calculator
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Sunglasses
  • Book weight.

I felt this was a relatively simple project because I typically don’t carry much in my backpack. I don’t know that this really represents me, but I guess I typically do keep things simple and organized. While making this image, I made sure to keep everything in line within the width of the bag in order to create a line of sight within which to view the items. I think getting the lighting right for the image was the most difficult part because I didn’t have a good light source. I overcame this by changing the light gradient in the photo editor on my phone. I don’t think representing myself in a catalog of the stuff in my bag as a type of writing because I typically associate it writing with language. However I do see how one could make such an association.

What’s in my bag?

IMG_3357

Laptop – essential in all of my classes for taking notes and checking my e-mail and canvas

Folders – used for holding syllabi and other looseleaf paper

Notebooks – if I feel like taking notes by hand or doodling

Headphones – can’t walk to class without using my headphones to listen to music

Sunglasses – I’m a huge sunglasses person and always like to have them for the good weather

Disposable camera – I love the look of disposable pictures and enjoy the random assortment of photos I always end up with

Markers – when I get tired of the gray pencil and want to spice up my white lined papers

Coloring book – I always have my coloring book in my bag for a study break and to focus on something other than school

Calculator  for those un-welcomed econ pop quizzes

Welly bottle – this is actually my brothers water bottle that he designed and produced, I’m always using it and spreading the word

Backpack – what makes all of the above accessible for my on-the-go lifestyle

I really enjoyed this sketch assignment because I never realized how much thought went into what I put in my backpack and  how much I have to anticipate for the rest of my day. This assignment forced me to evaluate the every day subconscious planning I take for granted.

I love finding items that offer the most convenience and maximize utility in my life while also represent my personal style.  I spent a good amount of time researching for a reliable backpack, because I knew it would be an investment that’s worth while and will last me.  I depend on my back pack every single day and I never took the time to fully appreciate how much it offers me.

My Bag

Items:

Spiral Bound Notebooks: The blue one is for my humanities-leaning classses, and the red is for math/science.

Nisa: A book I’m reading for my anthropology course.

PyongYang: A book that we’re reading.

Planner/Journal: I don’t usually carry this around, but it is useful.

Keys: Comes with an Idaho keychain, which I have never used.

Water-bottle: Stay hydrated, folks.

Reading Glasses: I don’t need glasses usually, but they help for staring at screens.

Splitter: This was given to me by my ex-boyfriend when we broke up. We split and then he gave me the splitter. He had it given to him by one of his friends when her relationship ended, and I suppose I will carry on the legacy by giving to one of my friends when they have a breakup. It has come in handy a time or two so I’m hesitant to part with it.

Items that don’t need explanation: Laptop, Backpack, Chapstick, Eraser, Earphones, Phone, Sunglasses, Breath Mints, Gum, Post-Its, Pencil Bag, Pens and Pencils.

I like the style of the photos where things are exploded out and arranged. Something like all the pieces of a watch pulled apart and placed in an aesthetic way. Because of this, I enjoyed doing this type of thing with my own items. In high school, I had a lot more things to carry around and as a result my bag was much more messy. I have since compacted down the things I carry, as well as picking up some better habits of keeping my bag clean and organized. Therefore this portrait is accurate as to what I carry in my bag, as well as the level of cleanliness. It is not fully accurate, however: I am missing two folders and I don’t usually carry the small red notebook in the lower left hand. The challenges presented with this were less about style because I didn’t go off of what I thought, but more so how I felt. I went up a floor and took the picture off of a balcony looking down. So that’s why the picture is a tad bit grainy.

This arrangement of items can be used to represent me, but I don’t think it is necessarily writing in the traditional sense. Writing is another form of representation, however, I don’t this type of thing is an extension of writing, merely a cousin. If anything, I think this is even similar to Graphic Novels because not only is it the contents that matters, but that the choices that go into the displaying and presentation matter as well. As a person, this display represents how I would like to be, but not necessarily how I am. My room could use a tidy, and I don’t always follow my to-do list like I should. It’s a goal to work towards, though.

What’s in my bag?

My Bag

  • Laptop – just pretty essential in most of my classes.
  • Planner – I rely on this a lot to plan out my semester. I like to have a calendar on my phone and a physical copy in case I lose either one.
  • Pencil Case – as you do.
  • Folder – just for my class handouts and/ or printed homework to hand in
  • A4 narrow lined paper – I can’t get used to writing on American sized paper, so I am still using English paper for now.
  • Umbrella – no one likes being soggy.
  • Coloured Fine liners – I like to add colour to my notes as I go along to make them slightly easier to work from later.
  • Extra Gum – for the off-chance that the DUC adds too much flavour.
  • Pencil Lead – resourceful.
  • Glue – to avoid sticky situations.
  • Calculator – I take a lot of number-orientated classes.
  • Wallet – I like to pretend that I have money to spend.
  • Pens – college essential.
  • Pencils – pretty standard.
  • Sharpie – just in case.
  • Scissors – they come in handy more than you think.
  • Glasses – Specy Becky has got to be able to see sometimes.
  • Sunglasses – its getting bright outside.
  • 2 broken protractors – just in case I ever want a disjointed curve, or two.
  • 3 rulers – together, they just about cover the entire length of a page.
  • Pastel highlighters – so so much nicer and easier to see than normal highlighters.
  • Rubber. Tipp-ex – for the many mistakes I make.
  • Sharpener – mostly for art.
  • Vaseline – dry lips are no fun.
  • Pads and tampons – because ya know – shit happens. Period.
  • B-School nametag – I need it most days for my classes so it just sort of chills in my bag now.

With most tasks I find the reflection the quick and easy part, and the actual creative process to be more time consuming and complicated, however, this was the reverse for this particular Sunday sketch. I found it very quick to just empty my bag and arrange my gear on the table, however, actually thinking about how these items could represent me, and the possible reasons for me carrying them around, took much longer.

In terms of how representative this is of me as a person, I would say it is pretty limited. Although my particular arrangement of items might speak about my personality, or the items that I choose to carry around may represent me in some way, I feel like this isn’t a particularly holistic representation of me. For example, I really enjoy sports, but there is no allusion to this at all from the items that I have in my bag. Furthermore, I have realized that I carry around a couple of pointless items, however, in general, I would say that I am quite a practical and organized person.

I didn’t have a particular ending arrangement in mind when I began to lay my things on the table, but I think my finished visual snapshot looks okay. I was constrained by the shape and size of the table, but I would say that I use the space that I had well. I also chose to empty my pencil case and arrange all of my pens/ pencils nicely. I also chose to put my highlighters in colour order. I’m not entirely sure why I did this, but I think it make the whole snapshot more aesthetically pleasing.

I would say that representing myself in a catalog of stuff is a form of expression, however, I am not sure if I would define it as a type of writing. It is certainly not writing as we would traditionally perceive it, as there is no physical writing on paper, or digital text, however, this is still a method of communication and would complement speech or spoken language very well. For this reason, I think I would conclude that it is a type of writing.

  • backpack
  • math textbook
  • notebook for doing the problems in my math textbook
  • calculator for working out math from my math textbook that I will then write in my notebook
  • Hammack for laying in while I use my calculator to work out math from my math text book that will then write in my notebook
  • mous (not actually about the animals even though I wish it was)
  • introduction to logic by Kant for those times I just need to relax

it was an interesting task making this picture as I tried to think about the impression someone would get of me from this image. In many ways it depicts aspects of our life that one may not get from normal conversation. It was also interesting to me to see what I walk around with everyday and how I can see that as expressing diffrent aspects of me. For example the Eno in my backpack really shows off my love for the outdoors and the math stuff my love for math. At the same time this only expressed certain aspects of my life and it would be interesting to see how this could influence their understanding of me.

Sketch 6

IMG_1010This image is the cleanest representation of my backpack’s contents. It’s usually a mess of papers stashed and crammed along notebooks and my trusty note-pad. I’m a big fan of notepads: being a disorganized person, having an outlet to simply write down anything I need to at the moment is just ideal; it also plays the role of being my math notebook.

Before taking this picture, I had no idea it’d be a task I get into that much. I spent a considerable amount of time rearranging all the objects into the ideal position for a nice picture. Although I lack talent, it sure was interesting to have an inner drive to display the contents of my backpack in a way that felt aesthetically pleasing.

This exercise also helped me discover my backpack’s logo, when assaulted by a camera’s flash, gives off a strange refraction of light when seeing the picture. The effect can only be seen in the picture, and surprisingly not in person. The more you know…

What’s in the box?????

IMG_0408To start top to bottom, the first item is a pill pack that holds Ritalin. I always carry Ritalin in my bag because I never know when I will need to be fully focused, and forget that I have ADHD.

The next item is my lovely backpack.  I’ve had that backpack since 10th grade and it really speaks to how I am as a person because it’s supposed to be for snowboarding or skiing. The backpack has two mechanisms to hold skis and a snowboard. The reason why It speaks my personality is because I am a really stubborn person and when I first got it all my friends would tell me how it was too small or that it wasn’t supposed to be for school but I stuck with it and made it work even up in college.

The next item is my ear muffs. I have ear muffs because whenever I have to take an exam or quiz I have to put them on because as a person with severe ADHD I will get distracted with any type of noise so any chance to cancel the noise out is perfect for me. This also shows how I am stubborn and don’t care what others think because in high school I would have people bother me because I looked like the people that work to signal the airplanes on where to park and would make fun of how I looked like when I took tests but I didn’t care.

The next item that I have is a train ticket from Boston to Providence. I always keep any tickets for special moments and that train I took with my girlfriend when I went to surprise here in Boston. I went to Providence with her because my best friend goes to brown and we both really wanted to see him.

The final object is my computer and there really isn’t much to say about my computer.

In this photo, I tried to put a picture of what I put in my backpack all the time. Depending on certain days, the content of my bag changes due to subject and schedule. Therefore I decided to show content that I always carry around when I am outside my dorm room. Laptop and charger are for note taking in the class. I always carry a calculator, pencil case, and notebook just in case If I need to do my homework which I might have forgotten to finish. Although I did mention that I use the laptop for note taking, I always bring notebook since writing mathematics and physics equation is much more comfortable than typing. Lastly, I always carry around Japanese textbooks since I have the class four days our of five. These content stay the same, but on different days I carry around visual novels for writing class and lab manual on physics lab. I wanted to create a photo that shows the materials I bring consistently to any classroom I go.
