Sketch 10: Unproductiveness
We all want to be super productive people. But tracking it may be scary.
I decided, with this sketch, that I wanted to see just how unproductive I was. But there were a few issues with this idea that we MUST talk about before diving into the data.
1. It’s almost finals week. That means that much of the week will HAVE to be spent being productive, giving this a slight edge to the productiveness of my life. This type of test would be most fair in the middle of the semester, where midterms are present. This way, you would actually have to be productive but not for as long of a period as for studying in finals.
2. I’m not always studying any time I’m not doing any of the things I tracked. I could be walking to class or having a stack or something that is tiny. But I can’t track each waking minute, so I have to generalize.
3. I could also be watching a YouTube video for only 5 minutes, but it’s hard to count those because it’s such a minuscule time. These small times could add up, and I may miss up to 30-40 minutes simply because I don’t count all the little 1 minute segments of watching something or the glances at Twitch streams.
Now, with that out of the way, it’s time to dive into the conclusion. It’s pretty clear that I’m a lot more unproductive on the weekends, simply because that is what I typically consider my “break time.” But I was surprisingly productive on the weekdays. Even when I took out my dinner and lunch time, along with my class time, I’m still looking pretty decent, with the exception of a few days.
I was actually able to overall answer my question. I was pleasantly surprised at the results, for I thought the situation was going to be a lot worse than what it actually was. I chose to see the data in the form of pie charts and bar graphs because it was mostly categorical, with the exception of the bottom graph over the course of several dates. However, I believe that, because each day was independent of the other, I would act as if each date was a category.
I’d say that this project told me that I’m actually a lot more productive than I lead myself to believe. This is both encouraging and dangerous, because it means I may have more leeway with myself being unproductive because of some excuse involving “but I work so hard.” I’d continue to do this the same fashion if I were to continue this, and I really liked this project (to a certain extent; sometimes it was an inconvenience).
Comparing Palestine and Pyongyang Reflection
As I heard from many students in our class, this assignment initially overwhelmed me. Where to start with two heavy graphic novels? But, I decided to take a step back from the prompt and look over the notes I took during our class discussions. This allowed me to first take in the main ideas, similarities, and differences within “Palestine” and “Pyongyang” into account. I then decided to discuss the obvious difference in graphic approach which mirrors the difference between the two storylines. I also went into detail about how the way both journalists collected information for their texts; how they had to do it in different ways for the two extremely diverse environments they were in. Collecting images to back up my arguments throughout this assignment was much more difficult than I initially thought it would be. While I remember certain panels in my head from my first read through the graphic novels, finding them was difficult let alone making sure they were in the right context for my argument. For example, “Pyongyang” has a plain flow so finding panels that actually backed up my specific argument by just flipping through the book was more difficult than intended.
SKETCH 9: RECREATE A MOVIE SCENE
When I was thinking about this assignment, I could not decide which movie scene to recreate. I talked to my roommate and we decided to choose this scene from the movie Twilight. We chose sweatshirt that was similar to the one in the original photo. We used the whiteboard as our background and the main object was this red apple. Overall, it was very funny to do it because we had to take more than ten photos and we were laughing after each of them as we could not get the right position oh either hands or the apple. Therefore, as it made us laugh and forget about other work to do for a few minutes, I enjoyed this assignment.
Red Writing Hood
I saw my friends’ red riding hood cape and the rest was history. She also happens to be blonde so it worked out well. I used flash to try and make it brighter like the snow. The part I was unsure of was choosing a background, so I played it safe and went with a plain background.

This made me think of Animal House, and when looking through the stills of the movie, I figured this would be the best scene to recreate. I had fun with it because it’s just a goofy thing to recreate.

Behold, the Godmother!
It was difficult to find a balance to find a balance between these three ideals:
- a movie I had actually seen
- easily executable with minimal resources needed
- recognizable/iconic (but still kinda unique/original)
I found that The Godfather satisfied all three of these requirements. I felt like the outfit ended up looking pretty good. If I had spent more time, I would’ve made myself have more wrinkles, a better mustache, and fixed the lighting so that it would cast my eyes in a deep shadow but my forehead and checks in a bright light. However, I am pleased at the quality of the end product considering the time frame and resources available.
I nailed the facial expression though.
