Assemblies Sketch

eng 101sk11

For this sketch, I immediately starting of things in which many parts comprised one whole item. For some reason, I thought of the way that Thanksgiving dinner is made up of many different dishes. The dishes actually began to relate with assignments we did in class, which I find to be somewhat pleasing. Even though it seems silly, I feel like it makes sense and the idea of our semester of ENG 101 being a Thanksgiving dinner actually seems kind of cute.

Mapping Spinning Reflection

While reading Spinning, I wanted to especially pay attention to large frames on a page because it means that the author wants the reader to pay attention to it. Since there were so many full page frames towards the end, I wondered if there was a correlation between the progression of the story and the frequency of large frames. Though it is not totally apparent, the amount of pages with large frames per chapter has a positive correlation through the continuation of the chapters.

I believe that the reason for this is because the large frames are used for dramatic effect so as the narrative gains traction Tillie Walden uses them to give depth. Also, as things change in her life, she began to change her artistic style.

Data Viz

My phone tracks the distance that I travel during the day. I wanted to categorize the distance I traveled into categories of leisure, exercise, and walking to classes. I was particularly curious to see how frequently I moved around during my free time. Basically, I discovered that my most consistent distance that I travel in a day is from walking to class, which isn’t surprising.

My main takeaway from this sketch is that I noticed that I barely move during my free time which isn’t great. After reflecting over the data, I realized that I spend most of my free time just sitting around and doing nothing. I feel like it would be better for my health if I spent more of my leisure time walking around or doing something more active.

Comparing Palestine and Pyongyang Reflection

I was surprised to find that that writing the essay comparing Palestine and Pyongyang was actually not that difficult. Once I had my leading idea, it was pretty simple for me to just punch it out. The main focus of my essay is the relationship between the the usage of vignettes and the styles of the comics. I went through a couple different drafts with different ideas, which in the beginning were mostly focused on surface level differences and similarities between the two books. But on the version I submitted, I found the topic that was the most interesting to me, which in turn made it quite easy to write about.

Recreate a Movie Scene

When trying to come up with a movie scene to recreate, I figured it would be best to use a scene from a movie on a college campus because it would be easiest to recreate. This made me think of Animal House, and when looking through the stills of the movie, I figured this would be the best scene to recreate. I had fun with it because it’s just a goofy thing to recreate.

Combophoto Sketch

At first, I couldn’t think of anything to combine; my mind was running blanks. So to distract myself from the assignment, I went on my phone to pass some time. Soon, my phone battery nearly ran out and that’s when I came up with the idea for this photo combo. I imagined that using up a battery is akin to burning a match because it slowly uses up its energy until it it dies off. Visually it made more sense if the burning end of the battery looked more like a cigarette burning. So I used an app on my phone to superimpose the burning end of a cigarette on top of a battery. It wasn’t too difficult to do, definitely the hardest part of the assignment was coming up with what to compose.

Tell Me a True Story

yayayayaya

This comic is based on an interaction I had with someone during spring break. It seems really simple but it really stuck out to me because it was such a bizarre interaction. A random man asked for a dollar at a gas station, so naturally I just assumed I wasn’t getting it back regardless of what he said. But to my surprise, he came back with it and returned it with a friendly “thanks”. I have no clue what he needed it for and I’m still confused by the interaction. Since it was such a simple interaction, I decided to draw in a minimal style, because I feel like it made the most sense. It’s different than how I usually draw but I enjoyed it because it seems more bland for comedy.

Drawing this imagine initially seemed like a fairly daunting task since I’m not good at recreating photo realistic images. However, I found it easier to just draw it in a style that I’m more adept at using. As I was drawing I began to find small details that I didn’t recognize from just glancing at the image. I can see the benefit of finding the important parts of an image by redrawing it by hand.
