Sketch 8: Combophoto Reflection

This was an extremely difficult assignment to start.  This is simply because it was hard to think of two image that would work together as a combo photo.  It took me some time to piece together the objects that I wanted to use.  As always for assignments likes this, I searched around my room.  Fortunately, I looked out my window and saw a construction crane.  I thought that would be a pretty simple idea to bounce off of.  Then, I noticed my ruler that I was using to put the finishing touches on my literary narrative.  I now had my two objects.  However, it was also difficult to find the image that would work in order to make these two come together.  Finally, I found a complex image of a crane and decided to pair it with a simple image of a ruler.  I have very limited experience with photoshop and related programs.  Putting the images together was slightly confusing, but I eventually figured out how to use the basic functions of Pixlr.  My image displays the precision and complex levels of construction.  The ruler ought to be considered one of the simplest tools tone used in building, measurements, and even construction; the crane can be considered and extremely complex one.  Therefore, i combined both these two levels to display the crying degrees.

This particularly assignment turned out to be very difficult for me to get done. I think it has something to do with trying to find two photos that can line up physically and color-wise, as well as make some artistic sense. This was not my first idea, but by time I had gone through so many iterations of trying something out, my standards dropped and I caved with something that was relatively easy. I like that this combo photo shows up close something so small and something that is large so far away. I think the combination makes the viewer think about pollution since one of the images is nature, and the other a known pollutant that people still choose to engage with. The photo on the right looks more ‘clean’ to me, while the photo on the left looks more ‘dirty.’ This is interesting, considering that the actual content of the photo points to exactly opposite of this.

Creating My Comic: Final Draft

Wow, what a journey this comic making process has been. Comics were never something I have been interested in, and now I’m making them. It’s a complete 180 that I would have never guessed to happen. I really enjoyed this project. It is something I didn’t have to throw all of my time into (not in a way that I slacked off!), but I could really put a lot of emotion and truth into it. I didn’t have to spend half of my time researching and citing and worrying about something being incorrect or interpreting information the wrong way, but instead I was able to put all of my energy into trying to accurately convey what I knew. No strings attached. This is the final project, I left it black and white because I didn’t like the idea of color for this project. I really like the simplicity of the black and white. I hope you all enjoy!!

I talked to my mom this morning, and we ended up reminiscing on our past family vacations, as my sister, who is a junior in high school, is on spring break and they have been traveling a lot for college visits. When I was young, my family would travel to Colorado every summer to go hiking, biking, and exploring in the mountainous region.  We talked about the time when I was around 9 or 10 and we were on a hike in Beaver Creek, Colorado. It was near the end of the hike, when we were making our way back down into the valley, when my entire family stopped to step over what they all thought was a piece of rope. However, the rope started moving. I am going to preface this with the fact that I have a huge fear of snakes. I hold my breath when passing snake exhibits at the zoo and I think it’s truly crazy that people have them as pets. When I saw the snake, my parents joke that I am the first human that flew. I jumped so high and screamed so loudly. With this memory fresh in my mind, after reading the description for this weeks Sunday sketch, I knew exactly what I was going to do. I found a picture of a snake and combined it with the picture of the rope. The movement of both allow the images to feel more connected. I think this image, and the project as a whole, gives people the opportunity to see that things are not always what they seem at first glance. Screen Shot 2018-04-01 at 1.51.33 PM

Sunday Sketch: Combophoto

This was probably one of my most favorite Sunday sketches we have done so far. I really enjoyed the searching process involved with creating this “masterpiece”. I have seen photos of this kind before, so I used the ones I have seen previously to kind of inspire my idea for this week. I found two photos from Flickr. The ballerina figure is from @leggab titled “Alone in the Ballet”. I knew I wanted the ballerina/flower combo, so it was a challenge finding the right pose with the right flower. The flower photo is from @wvgasguy titled “Dedicated to those with breast cancer…”. I used befunky.com to combine the two photos and create the ballerina/flower tutu combo. My photo is definitely not as polished as Steven McMennamy’s, but with some practice and maybe some fancy equipment I could get there.

Finding the right images to make this look like a new image was certainly a challenge. My first attempt failed miserably but then I realized that the easiest way to find pictures that had similar colors what to search Flickr by colors which is exactly what I did. By searching through colors I was able to match two images rather easily. I also tried to find a picture with a clear straight edge where I could stitch the two images together.

I don’t know if my picture says anything other than it being a house on a waterfall. I guess it could be about living on the edge always. It may be worth it for the view alone.

Sketch 8- Combophoto

I really enjoyed browsing Stephen McMennamy’s gallery of combo-photos.  His artistic combinations are made in a seamless manner that almost trick the eye and brain.  Each piece is unique, satisfying, and very fun. One of his photos had bones involved which sparked my idea for this assignment.  At first I thought I would make pencils the bones in a cartoon skeleton image. That initial idea posed a challenge as skeleton images on their own have tons of details that I would not be able to match even with different sizes of long pencils.  So, the X-ray idea came to mind. For some reason I also began to think pretzel rods would be more fun than pencils. It was challenging to cover the original X-ray in this cartoon image and even more difficult to shape, size, and angle each pretzel to make up a rib cage.  I was not able to add other bones and details; I stuck with the bare minimum. Without professional tools, I also was unable to crop the pretzel rods perfectly as background space is shown. In general, however, I definitely appreciate the simplicity and playfulness of my final product for this combo-photo sketch assignment.  IMG_8567

Canceled Class Sketch

I chose this image because it was centered on two things very clearly–her face and hand, making it easy to establish a focal point to draw from. I realized that not only are hands hard to draw, but I can’t draw hands. On the topic of art, humans really like to create meaning from chaos and entropy. Thus, something turns from something to art when one intentions it. Something that comes to mind is a court case in the Supreme Court where the line had to be drawn to distinguish porn from not porn. The conclusion that was come to by Potter Stewart (a justice) was “I know it when I see it.” That’s basically how I feel about art.
