In this photo, I tried to put a picture of what I put in my backpack all the time. Depending on certain days, the content of my bag changes due to subject and schedule. Therefore I decided to show content that I always carry around when I am outside my dorm room. Laptop and charger are for note taking in the class. I always carry a calculator, pencil case, and notebook just in case If I need to do my homework which I might have forgotten to finish. Although I did mention that I use the laptop for note taking, I always bring notebook since writing mathematics and physics equation is much more comfortable than typing. Lastly, I always carry around Japanese textbooks since I have the class four days our of five. These content stay the same, but on different days I carry around visual novels for writing class and lab manual on physics lab. I wanted to create a photo that shows the materials I bring consistently to any classroom I go.

Triptych

In this sketch, I decided to try to make a Tryptich on how I made my Tryptich. For this project, I had struggled with choosing definitive concept. The first concept I came up with was the traffic light, where each colored light had a quote about its color and last panel ending with a joke. I thought it was too blend and I went back to drawing random concept. Some of them were blend and horrible, and others were hard to make into to production or complicated. Then I came up with this Triptych where I used prize wheel to describe my process of making this comic. The last panel shows the panel where dart has landed. In that panel the comic is embedded on it. I think its minimalistic and does its job.

Why Comics?

Art Spiegelman: “The comix I like, and try to do, can be read slowly and often…. I try to make every panel count and sometimes work as long as a month on a page…. I’m excited by the ‘secret language’ of comics — the underlying formal elements that create the illusions” (24)

I think that this quote is similar to what comic stands for. In my experience, comics are read fast. You want to go to next page soon as possible since you want to see more action. But comics aren’t made for you to see a bunch of actions. These are made by people who want to convey their narrative visually. Sure if the panel has a lot of detail, it might be flashy, but they could also try to show the details of the story. Like in Maus where panels with most features are the ones that are interesting that one must read slowly to digest the content.

Tanning Elephant

I was struggling to find an object that was not too obvious that it would automatically give its shape to the viewer. I gathered all the small items in the room, and I was left with Chinese plastic spoon, Rubix cube, and a peanut. As I was taping the plastic spoon onto the white paper, I got an idea from the scotch tape I was using. I immediately saw the shape of an elephant’s head. The idea just came to my head. There was also a whale’s shape, but that idea was discarded. I didn’t want the elephant’s body to look realistic compared to the scotch tape since it would have looked odd due to its simple shape. After few brainstorming by looking at the picture of Dumbo on google image, I decided to draw the rest of the elephant’s body in a cartoonish way. After building up the sketch, I drew the final line with my pencil and took the photo. Looking at the first photo, there was a shadow on the left side of the elephant’s head. I didn’t like it as first, but I realized I could use that shadow for the sketch. I used the nearby golden fidget spinner as a sun. I thought it was a good addition to the drawing. I spun the fidget spinner and took the photo until I got a satisfied result. The elephant looked like it was sunbathing, so I named the sketch, “Tanning Elephant.”

MAUS: Chapter 3 Panel

I think the most important panel in chapter three was on page 61. The panel is borderless, and is the largest panel in that page. In the panel, there are two groups of people. While the Jewish people are about to be executed, the Germans are in happy mood and you can see two Germans having a drink in front of the execution. I think this is a important panel in the chapter since it is one of first major crime committed by the Germans against the Jewish people.

I chose my physics class lecture for my visual note. I thought it would be a good idea to try to convert various equation into a visual note for easier understanding. I tried to condense the concept of electric potential into a picture. It was a bit difficult since it really didn’t have a physical image other than a sphere. Eventually, I decided to use example problem to learn the basic concept of electric potential. After creating the visual note, I noticed that I was able to condense the text on two pages of note into one blank paper. With much fewer words, I was able to convey the same idea into this visual note. The visual note topic was about physics, so I had to add a lot of equation. This made me feel kind of regret choosing physics since it is mostly math and they are made out of equations. I am guessing that some topics have varying difficulty of changing it into a visual note.

  • What are your experiences with social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, or others? What do you remember about your first experiences with such sites? Do you text on a smartphone? What sorts of experiences have you had writing to/for people with those sorts of technologies?

Only social network I have is Facebook, and I rarely use them. I never got into social networking culture. I felt that there was no need for me to express my thoughts in open public area.

  • What are some of the biggest struggles you have had as a reader and/or writer? What are some of your best moments as a writer?

My biggest struggle with reading and writing was properly utilizing English. I really never had best moment as a writer.

Avatar SK1

I decided to draw my avatar by tracing various helmets in Motorsports. The helmet design is similar to the driver from Formula One, but I made some alteration while sketching like removing and adding certain features just for personal preference. I believed that using Motorsports helmet would be good ideas since it goes with the statement that how I like Motorsports during the first class. I relate the helmet with the visual novel since the only human part you can see is the eye. I believe that eye is the only way we can interpret visual novels since it is used to understand the content of the visual novel is through our eyes.
