Sunday Sketch: Combophoto

This was probably one of my most favorite Sunday sketches we have done so far. I really enjoyed the searching process involved with creating this “masterpiece”. I have seen photos of this kind before, so I used the ones I have seen previously to kind of inspire my idea for this week. I found two photos from Flickr. The ballerina figure is from @leggab titled “Alone in the Ballet”. I knew I wanted the ballerina/flower combo, so it was a challenge finding the right pose with the right flower. The flower photo is from @wvgasguy titled “Dedicated to those with breast cancer…”. I used befunky.com to combine the two photos and create the ballerina/flower tutu combo. My photo is definitely not as polished as Steven McMennamy’s, but with some practice and maybe some fancy equipment I could get there.

Waterfall

Finding the right images to make this look like a new image was certainly a challenge. My first attempt failed miserably but then I realized that the easiest way to find pictures that had similar colors what to search Flickr by colors which is exactly what I did. By searching through colors I was able to match two images rather easily. I also tried to find a picture with a clear straight edge where I could stitch the two images together.

I don’t know if my picture says anything other than it being a house on a waterfall. I guess it could be about living on the edge always. It may be worth it for the view alone.

Sketch 8- Combophoto

I really enjoyed browsing Stephen McMennamy’s gallery of combo-photos.  His artistic combinations are made in a seamless manner that almost trick the eye and brain.  Each piece is unique, satisfying, and very fun. One of his photos had bones involved which sparked my idea for this assignment.  At first I thought I would make pencils the bones in a cartoon skeleton image. That initial idea posed a challenge as skeleton images on their own have tons of details that I would not be able to match even with different sizes of long pencils.  So, the X-ray idea came to mind. For some reason I also began to think pretzel rods would be more fun than pencils. It was challenging to cover the original X-ray in this cartoon image and even more difficult to shape, size, and angle each pretzel to make up a rib cage.  I was not able to add other bones and details; I stuck with the bare minimum. Without professional tools, I also was unable to crop the pretzel rods perfectly as background space is shown. In general, however, I definitely appreciate the simplicity and playfulness of my final product for this combo-photo sketch assignment.  IMG_8567

Canceled Class Sketch

I chose this image because it was centered on two things very clearly–her face and hand, making it easy to establish a focal point to draw from. I realized that not only are hands hard to draw, but I can’t draw hands. On the topic of art, humans really like to create meaning from chaos and entropy. Thus, something turns from something to art when one intentions it. Something that comes to mind is a court case in the Supreme Court where the line had to be drawn to distinguish porn from not porn. The conclusion that was come to by Potter Stewart (a justice) was “I know it when I see it.” That’s basically how I feel about art.

Cupcake ComboPhoto

ComboPhoto

I came up with this idea as I was eating a cupcake from the infamous DUC-ling. I had our ComboPhoto task in the back of my mind, and I just thought that it would be interesting to replace the icing with other images, and see how it turned out. My next task was to think of white objects that could possibly look like icing. As demonstrated by my 5 ComboPhotos, I had plenty of ideas. The main challenges that I faced with this task were removing the backgrounds from the original photos, and cropping/ resizing the images so that they fitted together. My favourite creation is the cupcake with cotton balls as icing, I think the images just fit together well. I’m not too sure what the final image conveys, it is just fun to look at.

This picture specifically stuck out to me due to its almost lack of being a unique or posed event. What I first noticed when looking at the picture was the boy in front punching the ball. It stuck me because of the weird situation to photograph someone in such a peculiar position. After looking at it more though I started to notice more about the photo and appraised the depiction of motion more. With the subtle motion less background the motion of the boy makes him pop out onto the page. It was interesting to continue to look at the image as it developed more and more layers. I began to appraise the changes in color and depth that existed in the image.

SKETCH 7: TELL A TRUE STORY

For this sketch assignment, I chose to simply tell the actual story of how I spent my spring break. Due to the fact, that I did not travel anywhere and I was one of the three people on our floor who stayed in the residence hall, I was just watching TV shows and movies and basically doing nothing useful. When it was the first day of the break I was extremely productive, which motivated me and inspired me. However, the next day’s 12 hours of sleep and realizing that I can do whatever I want to made me procrastinate with my homework.

True Story: To eat or not to eat?

Walking along the beach with my dad usually was an activity comprised by lots of sun, business conversations, life advice, and a nice cold beer (legal drinking age in Nicaragua is 18…). However, this walk brought a small surprise. As we made our way back to the beach house, we saw a small creature squirming over the wet sand… it was a baby octopus. As fishermen and seafood-fanatics, our first instinct was to see if it was edible; after all, we loved eating octopus. However, as I carefully analyzed it, for some reason, the ruthless seafood eater became a compassionate person and grew empathy for the poor thing. It became impossible for me to even consider eating it anymore. We carried the baby octopus back to the house, placed it in an oxygenated fish bowl, and fed it fish. As the night settled in, we became increasingly interested in analyzing the octopus’ biological complexities, setting it behind many backgrounds varying in colors, seeing how effective it’s color-changing skin really was we quickly discovered that even baby octopi are masters of camouflage.

The sun rose again, and it was now time to head back to the city. With the octopus now well fed and ready to be released, we headed down to the beach and dipped the fishbowl into the water, but it was reluctant to leave its newfound home. We had to pull on it’s tentacles to release the suckers’ surprisingly strong grip, and he was quickly carried away by the waters. It’s release made me realize that I had made the right choice, when considering to eat, or not to eat.baby octopus

Tell a True Story – False Alarm!

Scan 1 2

This assignment was a rare occasion because for the first time I actually knew exactly what I was going to draw the moment I read the prompt. Furthermore, the images for each panel came to mind relatively quickly. Strangely enough, it was writing and formatting the text which ended up being the biggest challenge; something that I don’t normally struggle with. I think this occurred because I began by drawing the images before developing a written narrative. So, I had to sort of connect-the-dots with my pre-existing illustrations. Between Spiegelman and Sacco, I would say my comic is far more resemblant of Spiegelman’s style of story-telling, though my dialogue and illustrations are far less exciting!

Colin Combs Sketch

I chose to sketch a picture that was titled “Xanthe smoking with her cow Wally”. I liked this picture because it seems very simple, but it also sets up an image that is at once child-like and adult. The image of a teenager smoking a cigarette while playing dress up looks so perfectly caught in the head space between childhood and adulthood. It’s sort of the perfect image of adolescence, caught between wanting to be an adult and wanting to be a child and being self aware enough to want to document it.
