Literacy Narrative Comic Draft

When I first had to draw this comic, I had trouble figuring out how to start. I don’t have much experience with this type of medium, so I felt like I had a million of choices when it came to designing the narrative. However, once I decided on a style, the rest fell into place easily. For me, drawing the comic was much easier than writing an essay; it was much more fun. I consider myself to be a visual person, so putting my thoughts into images was much more interested than trying to describe them with words.

Tracing Maus Reflection

Tracing a page of a graphic novel is something I had never done before. I have analyzed dozens of texts for rhetoric, symbolism, etc. but I have never had to analyze a visual representation. It came to me more easily than I thought; I was finding details that I quickly glanced over when I initially read the pages. I immediately found things to write about and the word count was not difficult to reach. On my page I have a landing page that leads you through all of my observations and thoughts on the pages I chose.  It’s extremely impressive to me to take a step back and appreciate the dedication that Art Spiegelman had to this work. It makes me want to read it again with a keener eye.

The inspiration for this comic is just based off of a random thought I had earlier this week. I wanted to make a humorous narrative so I made it about how it would be funny if the stereotypical “trench coat disguising two people”  went a step further. The hardest part of making this comic was the actual drawing of it. I’m not much of a drawer, so the last frame was particularly difficult to draw. Making this comic was completely different from any other writing assignment I’ve had this semester because it forced me to think about how I could represent the narrative visually.

Mr. Coughdroppington

Last week, I was sick with a sore throat so I got some cough drops to ease my cough. This meant I got to spend a lot of time looking at the cough drops in their little wrappers. I noticed that they looked like little bow ties which inspired me to make a stereotypical gentleman that would benefit from a bow tie.

Making this list allowed me to think about how I can express text visually. It seems as though it would help me study since I’m thinking about the text in the form of of an image. Images are easier for me to remember instead of just text. I hope my work is being published correctly, I’m still new to the media format.

This is a picture of me in front of neon sign at Ponce City Market. I chose to just put some colorful streaks across the image because I just liked the colors. I think the wavy patterns are really fun which also reflects on my personality to an extent.
